Sanford and surrounding towns have a number of remarkable and significant natural areas. Some are home to rare and endangered plants and animals. Increased development has affected many of these special areas. Farms have been replaced with subdivisions, wildlife habitats have given way to houses, and open spaces for riding, hiking, fishing, hunting, or quiet enjoyment has been restricted.

These special places must be preserved if they are to be enjoyed by future generations and serve as refugees for native species.
